Chinese New Year

|

Last week the children at Imagine Heights explored Chinese culture and the significance of Chinese New Year.

In the Emu room the children created fans using red paper, as the colour red is supposed to symbolize luck and is believed to ward away evil. After completing their fans the children participated in a fan dance for group time, dancing and moving their bodies to the sound of traditional Chinese music.

Miss Helena added new Chinese dress ups to home corner for the children to engage in dramatic play, as the wearing of new clothes is clothing custom during the festival, the new clothes symbolize a new beginning in the year, and enough things to use and wear in the this time.

For art they created some beautiful lucky charm plates and enjoyed some delicious Chinese noodles for lunch.

To show the reasoning behind these activities, Miss Helena had a discussion with the preschool children and explained that it is Chinese New Year so we will be exploring the Chinese culture and traditions and why these things are important to the Chinese people.

To extend on this cultural learning the Emu room will be further exploring the different cultures present within the room and the service in the lead up to Harmony day.
